Tsujikura is Japan’s oldest Wagasa (Japanese umbrella) shop, which has been in Kyoto since the 3rd year of Genroku (1690 AD).
The traditions and culture that have been passed down for over 300 years are imposing.
Wagasa umbrellas are made with a frame made of bamboo to which Japanese paper is attached, rain umbrellas are oiled to make them waterproof, and parasols are made without oil but only with Japanese paper.
These umbrellas include the bangasa used to greet guests at ryotei (Japanese-style restaurants) and ryokan (Japanese-style inns), the janomegasa used by maiko and geiko, the parasol used to hide from the sun, and the maigasa used in kabuki and Japanese dance performances.
