Katagihara Honjin

Kyoto

Katagihara Honjin is the only remaining Honjin (main lodges for the postal system of the Edo period) left in Kyoto.

It burned down on New Year’s Eve in 1797, and the present main building was rebuilt in 1800. Although some parts of the interior have been modified, the rooms on the west side and near the front have undergone little alteration. The three rooms, “Ni-no-Ma” and “San-no-Ma,” which continue to the south of “Shodan-Ma,” are in the shoin-zukuri style.

The storehouse to the rear of the main building is known to have been built in 1766 (Meiwa 3) according to the building tag.

Please visit if you have time in Tokyo. It will be an educational experience.
