Kasuga Taisha has a history that goes back to the beginnings of Japan. Established as the main shrine for the then capital, Nara, it stands as one of the most important shrines within central Japan. Dedicated to the deity Takemikazuchi, it is the tutelary shrine of the powerful Fujiwara clan.
A key highlight of Kasuga Taisha is its thousands of bronze and stone lanterns, donated by worshippers over the centuries. These lanterns are lit during the biannual Lantern Festivals in February and August, creating a magical, illuminated spectacle. The shrine also features many smaller sub-shrines scattered throughout its precincts, each dedicated to different deities. When visiting Nara, please be sure to give it a look.
